10月30日 Double W Racing conquers all at 2008 Can Am ChallengeThe last event of 2008 had Team Double W trekking back
to the LTM facility in Casey, IL for 2nd annual LTOR Can Am
Challenge. In the weeks prior Vern prepped the teams Magnum
1 seater while fitting it with the Casper Racing 1200 grenade.
Team member Alvin was selected to operate the vehicle in
the 120 mile Baja style endurance race with Vern and Walter
manning the pits.
A 2 inch rainfall the evening before the race contributed to the
treacherous conditions this was to be test of survival for all the
vehicles. At the start Alvin settled in the 5th overall position which
he held for the first 3 laps after the Hillbilly team fell back due to
transmission woes. On lap 5 Alvin had diced through the mud and
traffic to take the top spot, he ran consistent laps building a 2 minute
cushion by lap 15 which he held until pitting on lap 21 for fuel, goggles,
and gloves. Vern and Walter made quick work of the stop and Alvin
was back in action regaining the overall lead on lap 26. During the
2nd half of the race the competitors began to drop as the result of
the conditions and Alvin again began to build his cushion.
As then laps wound down Alvin had the mighty 1200 performing at
a high level burying the competition winning by a margin of 4 laps
capturing the overall win and capturing the "Top Gun" award and
winning his first race.

10月16日 Double W claims 2008 MAORA Class 16 ChampionshipsAwesome weather and perfect track conditions greeted the
Double W Racing team when they arrived at the LTM facility
in Casey, IL last weekend. The LTM crew had worked hard the
last month to make the track wider, faster and the jumps larger.
Team Double W was 3 cars strong with Timmy and Vern in the
traditional 2 seat Phazer's and Rookie Alvin the bodyman in the
teams classic 5-1600 convertible.
Heat 1
Vern took the holeshot from the pole position with the Over the
Limit team and Timmy close behind. Also in the mix was the 2
Lucas Oil hotrods, a Floridian, and Alvin who was racing in his
first Short Course event. Vern held the lead until lap 3 when
Lucas Oil #1 got by, Timmy was busy wrestling the Floridian
while chasing the OTL 2 seater. The Lucas car was experiening
a throttle problem as Vern regained the point on lap 7 and held it
to the finish. Timmy disposed of the Floridian but couldn't reel in the
OTL entry finishing 3rd, Alvin was a bit back as he was getting used
to the fast paced action
Heat 2
With the field inverted the Lucas hot rod quickly grabbed the lead
and never looked back while the rest of the pack appeared to be
chained together. The positions got swapped several times during
the last 6 laps as Timmy, Vern the OTL and Floridian put on some
of the best race action of the season. At the finish Timmy slipped
from 2nd to 4th, the OTL entry had gained a spot to grab 2nd, Vern
struggled to the 3rd spot and the Floridian had drifted back to the 5th
place.
Heat 3
With all the marbles on the line Vern again grabbbed the holeshot
followed closely by Timmy and the OTL car. The Lucas hotrod got
held up in traffic only to track Vern down on lap 5 to make the pass.
Meanwhile Timmy and the OTL car continued their battle for position
and Alvin was on the heels of the pack with the over weight Baja.
On lap 7 Lucas spun and gave Vern another shot at the lead but it
wasn't enough to keep the young oilman from the heat win. As the
laps counted down the OTL entry was able to secure the 3rd position
followed closely by Timmy. The Floridian came home in 5th and Alvin
6th.
Overall
Vern 1st
Timmy 4th
Alvin 6th
120 mile ENDURO
A strong field of cars in Class 16 were launched 30 seconds
behind the Unlimited class with Alvin grabbing the lead in Timmy's
Phazer. Vern and the Floridian followed for 2 laps when the southerner
got by both Vern and Alvin using the bypass at the second creek crossing.
On lap 3 Vern got by Avin to grab 2nd as all cars had settled into a steady
pace. On lap 10 Vern made the move to first by overpowering the southerner
on the back stretch meanwhile Alvin was getting heat from the OTL car.
Vern pitted on lap 17 for fuel and had an extended stop getting the front end
looked over, the OTL car pitted just after Vern and Avin was in for a splash
on lap 18. Meanwhile the Floridian never pitted using a large fuel cell and a
steady pace to his advantage. Alvin and the OTL car pressed one another over
the closing laps and Vern faded with an fuel/ignition issue. At the checkers
the Floridian had about a 3/4 lap lead the OTL car grabbed 2nd, Alvin was 3rd.
Class 16 results (unofficial)
1st Peterson 28 laps
2nd Spear 28 laps
3rd Alvin 28 laps
