June 19 Double W shines in the darknessDouble W Racing was back in action this past weekend @ Soggy Bottom Raceway
in Greenup, IL during a 1 hour enduro. Vern carried the torch with Crew Chief
Walter on hand to battle the heat and bugs after fitting the Phazer with some KC
Hiliters. During the technical inspection session it became apparant the Vern
would have to bump up to Class 10 to compete. Class 10 is MAORA's newest
Class and has cars with twice the horsepower as Vern regularly faces in the
traditional Class 16. At 9PM sharp the flag was dropped as both the cars and
trucks to the 3/4 mile track in the darkness. It didn't take the top Class 10
performers long to put Vern a 1/2 lap down on the greasy well watered course.
Vern was busy trying to identify his marks ran a steady pace for the first 20
minutes waiting for the track to dry settling into 3rd place. At the 30 minute mark
Vern fell a lap down to the fast paced duo from Ohio then after a quick pit clean
the lights for better visibility Vern lost another lap. With 20 minutes left the 2nd
place car suffered a rollover in turn 2 Vern made a run to the finish battling with
the leader in lap traffic Vern was able to regain one lap with a strong finish as
one of the fastest cars on the track. At the end Vern had clicked off enough laps
to capture 2nd place in Class 10 and 2nd overall. It was a different experience
racing @ night something team Double W will entertain in the future.
Unofficial results:
Don Uhlenbrock Class 10 54 laps
Double W Racing Class 10 53 laps
Nick Sedler Class 10 51 laps
Dirk Carlen Class 7S 47 laps
