9月6日 Tough luck strikes Team Double WThe Double W race team had mixed results during
round 5 of the MAORA Racing Series in Casey, IL.
With a limited number of entrants Team Double W
elected to "bump up" to Class 10 a field of 2500cc
powered cars with 200+ horsepower.
Heat 1
Both Timmy and Vern elected to start from the back
row in order to stay clear of the high powered cars in
this class.
At the start the Weaver trucking Magnum grabbed the
top spot followed by the Sedlar Racing entry Vern and
Timmy fell in line in 5th and 6th respectively.
The top side of the course was very dusty as the limited
cars struggled at the back of the field. Both Timmy and
Vern took turns dicing with the Remote Beverage entry
as the top 3 cars were able to pull away.
On lap 8 2 cars tangled allowing the Double W cars to
move up at the checkers Vern was 4th and Timmy 5th.
Heat 2
Again a back row start was in order this time the race was
red flagged on lap 2 when the Drews Off Road car made it
of course in the trees.
During the restart again the Weaver Trucking car again grabbed
the lead until an ignition problem dropped him 2nd in the running order
Timmy and Vern swapped 3rd and 4th as both drivers fought the dust.
On lap 5 Timmy suffered an engine anomoly which did him in for the day.
Vern meanwhile had 3rd place in his sites and held it to the finish.
Heat 3
Only 4 cars made it to the final heat, Vern took the outside starting
position. The Weaver Trucking rocket again got the holeshot as Vern
sruggled to the 4th position against the higher powered vehicles.
On lap 2 the Weaver hot rod pulled off course allowing everyone to
move up, Vern was running consistent laps reeling in the leader who
was suffering from an ignition problem as well. The 10 car still had too
much suspension for Vern to overcome as he took 2nd place in a close
finish.
Overall
Vern 3rd
Timmy 5th
Enduro
The MAORA track workers had a fast course laid out for the competitors for the
30 lap enduro, but dust was going to be a problem.
Vern took to battle again with the Class 10 cars for the event, at the start he fell
into position and fell back due to the dust. On lap 12 the Double W car was in the
pits for fuel Vern got a cool drink and continued the battle after quick service by
Timmy. Vern was able to start picking off the slower trucks and eventually got to the
4th overall position before an engine failure struck ending the day on lap 19.
