10月14日 Double W Racing sweeps Marengo The busy Double W Racing team was back in action the week after Labor Day with another MAORA event at Marengo Indiana's 4H Fairgrounds. Team drivers Timmy, Vern and Alvin all saw action as Double W was one of the favorites after capturing the previous event on the 7 turn twisty "Short Track" in Southern Indiana. This event was a night race under the lights which fit nicely into the teams hectic schedule. Team member Alvin even brought along a grill complete with BBQ pork and all the fixins that the boys gnarled on all evening. Mechanics Race Alvin took the helm of Vern's Magnum and wasted little time bolting to the lead on the slick technical track, running consistent laps hitting his marks was never headed completing the six laps without a hitch to claim the victory complete with a winners circle interview in front of the crowd. Heat 1 With Timmy fresh off claiming the 3rd place award in the long jump contest and Vern on pole the action was fast paced at the start. Vern used the hole shot to his advantage to grab the lead while Timmy wrestled his way to 2nd place after 2 laps. Both Double W drivers were the class of the field as they distanced themselves from the Off Road Center hot rod who was in 3rd place. Vern was able to hang on to the lead until the finish with Timmy close behind as the laps wound down. Heat 2 The Lucas Oil entry, a local fan favorite, grabbed the lead in Heat 2 with Vern on his heels and Timmy close behind. On lap 2 the Oil rod spun in turn 3 allowing both Double W cars by as Vern set sail to the finish, the Lucas entry and Timmy battled long and hard swapping positions several times with a lot of contact being made. Finally on lap 6 Timmy's pace slowed as the noise from his right rear suspension began to grow. At the finish Vern took the heat win, Lucas came across in 2nd, and Timmy limped home in 3rd. Feature In this heat the young Oil man grabbed the lead and never looked back as he set a quick pace as Vern tried hard to reel him in to no avail, Timmy meanwhile cruised to the 3rd place finish scoring enough points to capture 2nd overall for the day giving Team Double W a sweep in the 2nd MAORA event in a row. Overall Vern 1st Timmy 2nd Sunday Enduro With Alvin at the wheel of the Magnum taking the fight to the High powered Class 10 cars the team readied for the 2 hour endurance race. At the start Alvin fell in line grabbing the 4th place position as he adjusted to the 1.6 mile wooded course and navigating in the dust. He was running consistent laps not far off the pace set by the Lucas Oil Class 10 car who was the leader. On lap 8 the 4wd Real Source car was in the pits after a clutch failure and Alvin was there to grab the 3rd overall position. Lap 13 saw the retirement of pre-race favorite and tough competitor the Off Road Center Class 10 car, meanwhile the Drew's racing entry was in and out of the pits with and engine anomaly allowing Alvin to climb to the 2nd overall position.The Lucas car was setting a blistering pace getting out to a 1 lap lead as the field navigated through the middle portion of the race. On lap 38 turn 1 snuck up and got Alvin inducing a roll as he caught a rut, the MAORA track workers quickly got him upright and he rejoined the fight now 3 laps in arrears still in 2nd place. A quick pit stop for fuel on lap 45 allowed Alvin the means to cruise to the finish struggling with clutch failure in the last few laps finishing in 2nd place in class and 3rd overall duplicating the feat Timmy and Vern had done in July.
